Thoughts On: Cave Story

Now here's a game I've put off for ages. Long ago, I'd heard absolutely wonderful things about this game. I didn't really know anything about it, other than supposedly it invoked classic Metroid. Well, on my current indie game binge, I figured now would be a good time to give it a shot. Did it live up to the hype? Find out after the break.

After watching the trailer, my expectations were brought down dramatically, which is good, because the game didn't live up to the hype at all.

I was hoping the touting as a game that evokes classic Metroid meant it evoked Super Metroid. Turns out  people really did mean regular old Metroid. Regular old Metroid is not a good game. But that's pretty much what this is, with the addition of an actual story.

Biggest downer was that I was hoping for a comfy time exploring a floating island, and instead got a challenging platformer. Challenge is fine and dandy, but it's not what I wanted from this game.
And yes, the first time I died to a spike pit I realized this was not the game I thought it was and adjusted my mind set accordingly. But then we're left with 'NES Metroid with dialogue and instant death traps and wonky-to-use weapon swapping' and I can't help but wonder how this game got the phenomenal reputation it has.

Not to say I didn't enjoy it. I did, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Turns out 'NES Metroid with dialogue and instant death traps and wonky-to-use weapon swapping' is still pretty fun. The addition of actual environments that aren't just vertical hallways helps tremendously. It just didn't live up to the hype.
