Thoughts On: Cthulhu Saves the World

Here's a game I typically would glance at and say 'the joke is in the title,' giggle at it, and move on from. But it came to me highly recommended from a friend, so, I figured I could give it a fair shake. Was my friend's recommendation well recommended? Find out after the break.

It's ok. Actually it's pretty neat. But it doesn't really ever do anything to go beyond that. There are two things that save it from being bland, those being the limited random encounters, and the combo system. Which for the vast majority of the game was how I topped out my damage, until Sharpe learned an incredibly powerful version of windstrike and was practically killing the final boss on his own.

Healing to full after every fight has the same pluses and minuses as in FFXIII. It allows every random fight to be dangerous, but removes the endurance testing portion of dungeons. He tries to bring this back by limiting MP, but with the save points restoring your MP to full placed just close together enough to ensure you never run out of MP, that's not really an issue. Shoot, if you really wanted you could hang out by those until the random encounters ran out.

Levelup mechanics are also actually cool. Get the choice of one of two things each level. Ultimately it means each character is able to be built one of two ways since most characters' levels are tailored to push them towards one playstyle or another, but that's twice as versatile as I expect my characters to be in these types of games.

The story and characters are one dimensional to the extreme, but that's ok. The game doesn't ever claim or try to be anything more than that, and it ends...well a bit after the 'Cthulhu is the hero' joke gets old, but not too old. Really your enjoyment of the game hinges on how much of a kick you get out of Cthulhu being the main character / a JRPG hero.
